My Household Emergency Plan

You cannot predict every emergency, but you can make the important decisions beforehand.

Complete the sections that are relevant to your household. Discuss the plan with everyone involved and keep a printed or electronic copy somewhere secure and accessible.

Your information remains private. This form does not send your answers to WHR or save them on this website. Until you print or save the plan, the information exists only in this open browser page. Avoid completing it on a public device, and store finished copies securely.
Immediate danger: call 999. If escaping a house fire or another immediate threat, leave at once—never delay to collect this plan, a Grab Bag or possessions.
In the print window, choose your printer or Save as PDF.

1. Who is included in our plan?

Include everybody who lives at the property, regular carers and any pets.

Record only information that is genuinely useful in an emergency.

2. How will we contact each other?

Keep important numbers on paper in case a phone is unavailable or cannot be charged.

3. Where will we meet?

Choose a nearby meeting point and a second location outside the immediate area.

4. Where could we go?

Have more than one option in case your first destination is unavailable or also affected.

5. How would we leave?

Consider transport, local routes and whether anybody would need to leave earlier or require assistance.

6. What must we take?

Decide what is essential before an evacuation becomes necessary. People and safety always come first.

7. What if we need to remain at home?

Plan for disruption to electricity, water, heating, communications, shops or normal care arrangements.

Safety: only isolate a utility when it is safe and appropriate. Never touch electrical controls while standing in water.

8. What are our arrangements for pets?

Make sure carriers, leads, food, medication and suitable accommodation can be arranged quickly.

9. How will we obtain reliable information?

Use official warnings and trusted local information. Do not rely upon a single phone, app or social-media service.

Information sources we will use

10. Who might we help—or ask for help?

Discuss arrangements in advance; do not assume that help, transport or access will be available during an incident.
